Richard Mahony

Richard, Managing Director at Bryant Park Financial Communications, pioneered the concept of risk communications to help leaders and their organizations achieve ambitious goals and manage challenges. A former investment banker and past president of the Public Relations Society of New York, he works with firms of all sizes, from a financial institution in the crosshairs of a regulatory inquiry to a manufacturer in a restructuring; from a film producer looking for financing to an entrepreneur embarking on an IPO. His highly regarded Risk Matters blog provides a thoughtful, often contrarian view of media and reputation management.

Richard began his career in investment banking at J.P. Morgan. He was later appointed head of the firm’s worldwide media relations group, where he led a transformation of the firm’s external communications. He held senior communications and marketing roles in New York and London, where he served on Morgan’s Operating Committee. He worked with the firm’s senior executives during the rapid growth of its asset management, derivatives and emerging markets businesses, and he led the launch of RiskMetrics and CreditMetrics, Morgan’s groundbreaking value-at-risk methodologies.

For 10 years Richard held senior positions at leading communications advisory firms Gavin Anderson & Company and Edelman. He advised CIT Group during its spin-off from Tyco International – a program that was named “Campaign of the Year” by PRWeek magazine.

Richard holds a Masters Degree from Harvard University and a B.A. from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is a member of the Turnaround Management Association and is a past president and a member of the executive committee of The Public Relations Society of New York.
